Last week, we talked about sealing the cracks in your home to keep the cool AC air from leaking out.  This can save you quite a bit of money over these next few hot months.  We know that times are different now and that money is tight.  That is why it is important to do what you can to reduce your energy usage for lower bills this year. So, this week, we have another money-saving tip for you to try out!

This week’s money saving tip is to install adequate insulation in your home.

A home with a poorly insulated (or not insulated) attic can lose up to 40% of its cool air!  Have you checked out the insulation up there?  Insulation in the attic should be at least 6 to 14 inches thick.

Have you ever gone into your attic in the dead heat of summer?  It’s the thickest, hottest air.  When your attic is not properly insulated, the hot air will radiate through-out your home.  What happens when all that heat radiates through the home?  Yep, you guessed it.  The overall temperature rises, increasing your air conditioner’s energy consumption, creating even higher energy bills.

Insulating your attic can be a pretty simple project.

While the initial cost of purchasing insulation may be more than you care to spend, it can save 5 to 10 percent on your cooling costs.  Not to mention, the amount you will save once winter comes, as the insulation will also work to keep the heat in your home.  It will usually pay for itself within one year.

There is even more good news.  Taking steps to make your home more energy efficient qualifies you for a tax credit.  You can receive 10% of purchase costs up to $500.  Be sure that the product you use will qualify.  You can do this by contacting the manufacturer or looking at their website to see if they offer a Manufacturer’s Certification Statement, which is a signed statement from the manufacturer certifying that the product or component qualifies for the tax credit.  This is necessary for your records if you plan to apply for this tax credit.
