Due to the frigid nature of winter, many households drastically spend more energy trying to stay warm. Here at Anchor, we’ve compiled some tips to help stay green and comfortable to help save the environment and your wallet at the same time:

  • You can save a lot of energy and money by lowering your water heater’s temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. You can also install a water heater insulation jacket, which are available for both gas and electric heaters, to further save energy. Insulating water pipes is another efficient way at going green for the winter.
  • Try to limit those long, warm showers. Although they may feel fantastic during the cold weather, they can really cut into your heating and water bill. Install a low flow showerhead if you are prone to long showers; they can save up to two gallons of water every minute.
  • Only run the dishwasher and washing machine with full loads to save water and energy. You can switch off the heated dry cycle on your dishwasher, as the lingering heat is enough to effectively dry your dishes. Avoid using the dryer as much as possible; hang your clothes out to dry when sunny or inside on a rack to reduce the energy output in cleaning your clothing.
  • Caulk up and weather strip your drafty doors and windows to lower the frequency of running your heat (you can place lit candles by suspect door and windows that may have outdoor air flowing through them to discover any leaks that may need to be filled). Installing storm windows and doors can further reduce the amount of energy consumed to keep your home warm.
  • You can use fans to cheaply help spread heat throughout your home. Remember, they must be slowly rotating in order to effectively distribute the warmth!
