One the most frequently asked questions that we get here at Anchor Heating and Air Conditioning is “Where should I install my thermostat?”  Believe it or not, there are places in your home that are better suited than others for your thermostat.  Some areas in your house or business can actually give your thermostat inaccurate readings of the general temperature of the home. Check out these tips on where NOT to install a thermostat in your Douglasville home for an efficient working thermostat:

1.    Having your thermostat in direct sunlight is one the most common issues for people whose thermostats are receiving inaccurate readings.  If your thermostat is in direct sunlight it will obviously interpret your home as being warmer than it actually is.  These can cause an uncomfortable environment in your home! In the winter, this can cause the thermostat to turn the heat off even though the rest of the home is still cold.  In the summer, it can cause your air conditioning to continually run despite the fact that the rest of your home is already cool.
2.    For the same reason, having your thermostat right above or below a vent can cause problems in your home.  If the vent is blowing warm or cold air directly or close by the thermostat, it can cause inaccurate readings.  Which, as we said before, can cause your heating to shut down prematurely or for your air conditioner to be used unnecessarily.
3.    Having your thermostat installed in a kitchen is also a bad idea.  Kitchens typically tend to be a little warmer than the rest of the house, especially during use.  The heat from cooking can give your thermostat widely inaccurate readings.  The heat from the stove/oven can raise the temperature dramatically for quite some time – causing all the same problems discussed earlier.

Making sure that your thermostat is placed in an area that reflects the general temperature of the entire home will ensure an efficient working thermostat, resulting in a comfortable temperature for all.  For more information on how to make sure your thermostat is working and is calibrated properly or for information on our Maintenance plans that include thermostat calibration – give us a call at 770-942-2873 or contact us on the web at www.anchorac.com.  You can also join our online community on Facebook where we share tips, articles, and even prize giveaways.
