As frigid temperatures quickly approach us (it gets worse, folks) it is time to start thinking about how we can save money during the winter.  We discussed many tips for saving money during the sweltering summer months, but there are also some things you can do to conserve energy and gas consumption during these colder upcoming months.

Obviously, the first and easiest thing you can do to reduce your energy bill this winter is to turn down the thermostat. The recommended temperature to program your thermostat for the winter is 68° F.  To some this is the ideal temperature, to others it may seem a bit chilly.  If you become tempted to turn up the heat, first try bundling up.  Wear socks or slippers and put on a sweater.  To take the shock out of cold tile, hardwood, or linoleum flooring – try placing rugs on the floor.

Changing HVAC filters monthly is another easy and cost-effective way to conserve energy.  When filters become dirty and clogged, your system has to work harder to heat your home.  What that means for you is a higher bill. And that is the opposite of what we want!  So continue to change your air filters monthly throughout the winter to ensure an efficient running system.

During the day, you should open all the blinds and shades to allow all of the sun’s heat to penetrate your home.  Once the sun goes down in the evening, you should close all of the shades to keep the collected heat in home.

If your attic is not properly insulated, this is a great time to do it.  In houses with poorly insulated attics, all of that heat you are paying for will escape through the attic.  Insulation can be purchased at any home improvement stores.  On top of conserving heat and energy, you may also qualify for certain tax credits, as well.

Making sure your heating system runs as efficiently as possible is an ideal way to reduce your heating/energy bill.  Have your HVAC system serviced once per year by a NATE-certified technician to make sure your system is running smoothly and that there are no potential problems that are bogging your system down.  A licensed and trained professional will be able to assess your system and perform a “tune-up” to ensure that your system is doing exactly what it is supposed to do.
