If you are living in the South, it’s H-O-T! Unless you are indoors 24/7 enjoying the comfortable, cool air output from your air conditioning system, you may need to pay attention to the following tips to keep cool during extreme heat. At some point in time this summer, you may have to surface and trek into the outdoors. Be prepared with these 4 tips!

1. AVOID PEAK HOT HOURS – We’ve all heard of limiting sun exposure between the hours of 10am-4pm. This doesn’t mean just peak tanning hours at the beach, lake or pool. It’s best to try and avoid any exercise or extreme physical exertion outdoors during these times. If you do find yourself outside during these times, drink plenty of water. Be aware of exposing the elderly and small children to the outdoors during the peak hot hours as they can be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Don't forget about your pets. If possible bring pets indoors during extreme heat. Make sure outdoor pets have a pet house or are located in a shady area. Keep water bowls filled with water to keep them dehydrated.

2. DRESS ACCORDINGLY – If possible wear lightweight clothing when venturing outdoors. Darker colors tend to draw the heat in. Cotton blends tend to keep you cooler. Try and avoid synthetic clothes that may increase the heat. Hats and sunglasses are also recommended to protect your scalp and eyes. If you have long hair, consider pulling it up into a ponytail or tuck into a hat.

3. KEEP THE DOGS COOL – Wear footwear that breaths. If you must wear heavier shoes such as sneakers, wear socks that wick away moisture. Take caution when walking on hot sand or artificial pavement. These surfaces can become extremely hot and may cause feet to scald.

4. WATER IS YOUR BFF – It’s never a bad idea to get a good water intake on a daily basis. But during the hot summer months, you may need to up your intake to keep hydrated. To see if you are dehydrated, note your urination frequency and color. If you haven’t gone in a while and the color is dark, you need more water. Spritz yourself with water to also cool down. Your local athletics store probably carries a water bottle/spray bottle combination that is great to help you cool down quickly in extreme heat.
