Summer has been especially brutal in Metro Atlanta this year, which means you're probably relying heavily on your cooling system to stay comfortable. Unfortunately, the increased demand can result in a number of AC issues.

Strange noises like banging or screeching are a common sign of potential problems in both air conditioners and heat pumps. However, different sounds can point to different problems. At Anchor Heating & Air, we have over 50 years of experience providing HVAC services from Palmetto to Marietta. We’ve heard every weird AC noise out there and can help you find a reliable solution that improves performance and efficiency. Here are some of the sounds we often get called about, and what they mean for your cooling system:

1. Whooshing

Whooshing and other high-pitched noises are commonly related to airflow issues. The problem could be an easy fix, like a dirty air filter or blocked vents, and you should always check these first. If the issue persists, it could mean a bigger issue like a damaged fan motor and should be dealt with by a professional.

2. Squealing

Screeching and squealing sounds often point to a broken fan belt in older air conditioners and heat pumps. Fan belts aren’t common in newer models, however, in which case worn down condenser fan bearings can be the source of the noise. In either case, professional AC repairs are likely necessary.

3. Clicking

Clicking sounds, especially when your system is turned off, is usually a sign of an electrical issue. The problem could be within your cooling system, thermostat, or even in your home’s electrical system. Since electric work can be dangerous, it’s always recommended to call in a professional when you hear clicking from your AC.

4. Rattling

Banging and rattling sounds commonly mean that something is loose inside of your air conditioner. Every component of your cooling system has a purpose and loose parts can quickly lead to a bigger problem and costly repairs.

5. Pulsating

Pulsating noises are usually connected to the outdoor compressor unit. These issues are usually more complicated and may end with an AC replacement, especially if you have a cooling system over 10 years old.
