Folks will always try to save money, especially when it comes to home repairs.  Do It Yourself books and tutorials can be found all across the internet.  In some cases, it makes good sense to “Do It Yourself”.  But in certain instances, DIY can be deadly.  A person who has not been trained to repair an air conditioning unit should not attempt to do so. Why not? It’s simple: the inside of an air conditioning unit is chock full of dangerous high voltage things you should not be touching!  It can cause serious injury or even death.  That is why AC units have those scary “Do not touch” stickers. There are a few things that we do encourage homeowners to do themselves.

  • Change your filters. In some cases, changing your filter may be all that is needed.  If you see ice forming on the large line going to the unit, checking your filter is a good place to start.
  • Homeowners can also check their condenser coils on a regular basis as a preventative measure, especially if your unit is located in a close vicinity to your dryer vent.  Dryer lint is NOT good for your AC unit.
  • If your AC does konk out, checking breakers, fuses, and the thermostat is something that you can do.  But if your AC unit does need repair you should always remember to call a licensed and insured professional.
